indian summers

saw so many things today,
it made me wonder.
the quiet breeze, leaves blowing by
as the snow gently falls,
winter here at last.

went out to rake leaves today, came back
empty-handed, but with a full heart.
man walking his dog, swear i saw a smile on its face
felt the peace of god as he silently moves everywhere
listening for the first time in too long.
hugs, knowing glances from friends, two thirty break
nostalgia, reminiscence, memory, flooding back
from strange places in unexpected ways.
the happiness of history reinforcing the foundations of faith
for the future, for the present

hot chocolate heating the chest
as it pours down.
scarves and mittens, warm words
from warm people. that
unexpected phone call that turns out
unexpectedly well.
the hope of love, may it be here always
as it is now.

it's cold outside, but it's plenty warm
in here, my dear, so
shut the door, darling, and join me
under these cozy covers and
we'll teach and learn
all
about
indian summers.
